Douglas Volunteer Fire Department

At its conception, the Douglas Volunteer Fire Department was known as Douglas Hose Company No.1 with a long history dating as far back as 1889. The organization has served as a cornerstone of public safety in Converse County, Wyoming, for over 135 years. What began as a small group of community-minded individuals with hand pulled hose carts has grown into a modern, full spectrum emergency response agency known for its professionalism, dedication, and resilience.

Today, DVFD is an all-hazards department meaning it is fully trained and equipped to respond to a wide range of emergencies- including structure and wildland fires, emergency medical services, vehicle extrications, hazardous materials incidents, technical rescues, and disaster response. The department covers an expansive and diverse response area of over 3,200 square miles.

The department is staffed by a dedicated team of approximately 45 volunteer firefighters, who serve around the clock 365 days a year. Despite being a volunteer department, the DVFD maintains a high standard of training, operational readiness, and professionalism. It operates under the Fire Suppression Authority of Converse County and maintains a class 4 ISO rating, reflecting its effectiveness in fire suppression, and emergency preparedness.

DVFD operated out of a central station located in Douglas. In recent years the department has invested heavily in modern training infrastructure to include a state-of-the-art burn building and training complex completed in 2025. This was made possible through funding initiatives from many different sources such as City of Douglas, Converse County, WY SLIB, and numerous other generous donations from businesses operating in the Douglas area.

Throughout its history, DVFD has remained closely tied to the Douglas community. Beyond emergency response, the department is active in fire prevention education, community events, and annual traditions like the Fourth of July fireworks and Douglas Fire Demolition Derby, which we proudly organize and staff.

From its 19th– Century roots to its current role as a modern public safety agency, the Douglas Volunteer Fire Department continues to exemplify the spirit of service, preparedness, and community partnership that has defined it for generations.
